Hospital Dress Code for Nails and Jewelry
Acrylic Nails
Most hospitals require patients to remove at least two acrylic nails, one on each hand, before surgery. This is done to allow for the use of a pulse oximeter, a device that measures blood oxygen levels. Acrylic nails can interfere with the pulse oximeter's ability to get an accurate reading.
Jewelry
All jewelry, including nose, lip, and belly button rings, must be removed before surgery. Jewelry can harbor bacteria and increase the risk of infection. It can also interfere with surgical procedures and equipment.
Gel Polish
It is advisable to remove all artificial nails and gel polish before surgery. Gel polish can chip or peel during surgery, which can lead to complications. It is also important to remove nail polish the night before surgery to ensure that it is completely removed.
Body Piercings and Makeup
All body piercings and makeup must be removed before surgery. This can help reduce the risk of infection and allows doctors to see your skin and nails to assess your blood circulation.
Other Considerations
Acrylic nails and polish may be allowed if they are short and do not interfere with the pulse oximeter. Your anesthesiologist will make the final decision on whether or not you need to remove your nails or polish.
