49ers Bolster Depth at Quarterback With Sam Darnold

San Francisco Signs Former Jets QB to One-Year Contract

Darnold to Serve as Backup to Trey Lance

The San Francisco 49ers have addressed their depth at the quarterback position by agreeing to a one-year contract with former New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, according to sources.

Darnold, who was selected by the Jets with the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, will serve as backup to Trey Lance, who is entering his second season as the 49ers' starting quarterback.

The addition of Darnold gives the 49ers a more experienced backup option than Nate Sudfeld, who was brought in last season following the retirement of Jimmy Garoppolo. Darnold has started 54 games in his career, throwing for 10,624 yards, 54 touchdowns, and 52 interceptions.

The 49ers hope that Darnold can provide stability and leadership as the team looks to contend for a Super Bowl title. The 25-year-old quarterback has shown flashes of potential in the past, but he has also struggled with consistency and turnovers.

If Darnold can stay healthy and play well in his new role, he could be a valuable asset to the 49ers. The team will be counting on him to be ready to step in and play if anything happens to Lance.
